Modernising school lighting: more brightness, lower energy use
Many school buildings date back several decades and now require substantial renovation. Among the most impactful upgrades, modernising the lighting delivers immediate benefits: greater comfort, better day-to-day functionality, and a significant reduction in energy consumption. At GO Antwerpen, the technical teams — including electrician Dirk Wauters — have taken an essential step forward by adopting Project Zero’s LED solutions.
Project details
- Client: GO Antwerpen
- Type of intervention: replacement of fluorescent lighting with LED fixtures
- Initial issues: installations from the 1960s–80s, fire risks, unstable brightness
- Results: reduced consumption, improved light output, increased safety
- Technology: Project Zero LED fixtures
Site specifics
The group’s schools were still equipped with outdated fluorescent tubes, in some cases more than fifty years old. These lamps were not only energy-intensive: they also posed a fire risk, created unstable, distracting lighting, and no longer met the needs of modern educational environments. Replacement was a priority to ensure a safer, healthier workplace for staff and students.
Our response
Project Zero supported GO Antwerpen with a modern, reliable LED solution tailored to each building. The new lighting delivers:
- Significantly lower energy consumption
- Improved luminous efficiency
- An optimised power factor (Cos Phi), reducing losses during electricity transmission
- A more stable and safer installation for all users
These first relighting projects have already been very positively received by staff and leadership. The rollout will continue until every school in the group benefits from high-performance, long-lasting lighting — finally putting an end to the era of flickering neon tubes.
